How To Make Link Exchanges Like An Expert

Now there are many methods to get one way links. You can find new methods yourself just by exploring the Internet. Check out any website that allows you in some way or another to add your link without having to link back.

Not very common methods include submitting your website to awards sites. These are sites that accept website submissions, then they award the website with the best web design, the best content and so on. Then give the winner a badge, a star or something like that. But they also link to that website from their awards page.

With a bit of research you can find many other methods.

The method I enjoy is forum submission. First of all you are not just submitting the same website information like you do with directory submission. You are replying to a forum post, a discussion, so it is interesting.

You can find forums related to your website, and you are getting one way links while chatting more or less. Here is the proper way to do it.

First of all you join a forum. They send you confirmation email, so you have to check your email and visit the link in that email. It is easy. Next login, and find the profile page, usually called profile, settings, control panel or something like that. You do not need to fill in all the information, but just the signature box. In that box, enter maximum one domain.

I do not suggest you put more than one domain, or else you may look like a spammer.

Always include a keyword in the anchor text. So you create a text link, the keyword that links to your domain name. You cannot input html code in this box, but special code. Next to this box, there is information on how to add a link, it is called BBC code sometimes.

Basically you click that and follow instructions, there is how to make bold, italics, underline and many other fonts and styles. However you are only interested on how to make a link.

Then click submit to save your profile, find a post you can reply to and make your reply.

Make sure the signature appears under your post. This appears automatically. While posting you should see a link to Advanced Options somewhere. You can click that and see other options, one allows you to add signature to your post.

You can also go to your profile again and edit settings there, but usually this is not required, since by default most forums automatically add your signature to posts.

You just got a one way links from this forum. This is more powerful than a link from a directory. That does not mean you ignore directory submissions. Treat it as another method you can use, when you wish, but forum submissions is much better, so you can simple do only that.

A link from a forum, is better because it is in between content. Links inside an article or any content is better than a link from a page with no content at all.

Once you have replied to a post, it is time to join another forum. You want backlinks from unique websites, it is more powerful. However bookmark the forums, because within a month or two you need to repost a message, and always make a decent and useful post.

Not a one line post. Pick a post where a member posted a question, and if you can reply to that and help him. So you are not just posting for a link, helping not spamming.

You need to repost, or else administrator of forums simple thinks you are spamming, if you only posted once in two months.

So remember you want one way links to improve search engine rankings, so make sure you implement one of the several methods, forum submission is one of them. Do it regularly and daily, get the same number of links everyday approximately, so it all looks natural to the search engines.

Here are some myths that many webmasters faithfully follow. Test results show proof that these are no correct theories. They may be understood incorrectly or invented by wanna be gurus seeking attention. So let us start with the number.

Link exchanges are dead myth.

This practically means that you loose thousands of backlinks if you deny link exchanges.

There are certain guidelines to follow when doing link exchanges however they are great link building method. They are highly effective as well, you cannot say link exchanges are no longer that effective. They still are as much as they were. That was going to become some new theory as well. By effective one understand they are very easy to get and search engines consider them powerful.

What is dead for sure are blog comment posting probably, since almost all blogs are now using nofollow tags. The two most effective methods to get links are article submission and link exchanges. Obviously article exchanges are much better than link exchanges, but they are not effective, since it is too difficult to make at least one article exchange. So you cannot say they are more effective or more powerful. The reality is they are not.

Make link exchanges with only related or relevant sites myth.

Make link exchanges with websites that have a specific pagerank myth.

It means one thing, you loose a ton of links, denying certain websites. It does not matter if the site has pagerank zero or ten, it is still an important link to get. This will only affect your rankings in a positive way by exchanging links with all websites.

Ok, some have pagerank zero and you did all that work and have a pagerank of four. So what? Do you no longer want backlinks because you have a higher pagerank? Everyone needs backlinks, no matter your pagerank.

Article submission myth.

There are many things wrong, including the duplicate content theory. It strictly does not exist, webmasters simple understand it wrong. Submitting the same article to all article directories and everywhere is a great thing, you get all those one way links.

Spinning titles, descriptions and so forth is not required. No article, webpage or website will get banned by doing this.

However if you grab an article from some directory to put it on your website, it is a good thing to do if you link to the source. Not only because you should give credit to the author, but spiders appreciate it.

What you need to make unique is meta tags. I am not saying you can have exactly similar webpages on your website. That is not a good thing to do, obviously.

Making sure you do not fall victim to invented theories or incorrect ones is important. A new theory is created out of nowhere every now and then. This is happening all the time and these spread like a virus. People seems to love talking about what works and what does not.

However what is important is to stick with what works and avoid believing into new things as if they are some strict rules.

All you have to do is pay close attention to not do any of the following. Getting banned rarely happens but if it happens it is almost a guarantee that your website will remain banned. Google has a sort of submission form, so you can request re inclusion in the index if you got banned. You can use this to try and get your website back.

Linking to a banned website.

If you are doing link exchanges this rarely if every happens, because if a website is banned they no longer keep doing link exchanges. But if you know of a website that is banned, then obviously do not link exchange with it.

Doing nasty things can create problems, the worse case is getting banned. Keyword stuffing for instance or trying to cheat the search engines using black hat software can raise red flags to the search engines.

Keyword stuffing is when you over repeat your keywords in the meta tags or on your website. So keep meta tags short and clean.

Everything that looks like cheating should be avoided. You can hide what you are doing from your visitors but not the search engines. If you put a bunch of keyword on your homepage with white color text so they are hidden, search engines still see that.

Having said all this, if you intentions are good then you are 99.9 per cent safe.

So why black hat software can get your website banned.

The answer is quite simple. Search engines do not want sites that are cheating their way to the top. They do like it if you are optimizing your website to get high rankings. That is something they recommend in fact.

But cheating or spamming using black hat software most often create garbage on the web and in the search engine index. Obviously no one wants that, neither search engines.

Many things can go wrong if you are using black hat software and you never know when. Search engine optimization software exist and you should use it - but only the white hat software.

Other people can report your website as spam. Google has a form where you can report spam in their index. If your website gets several reports of spam or even one and it is verified as spam, you are risking being banned.

Once again if your intentions are good, even if you get a hundred complaints from nasty competitors maybe who just want to out rank you, your site will not get banned. They manually review each website before they ban it.

So these are just things to keep in mind when doing seo. These are bad when you repeat over and over again. Even if you over repeat keywords in the meta tags your rankings will drop maybe, but it will not get your website banned the next day you do it. Some by mistake or without proper knowledge put as many keywords as they wish in the meta tags. Just fix that and you be safe.

That is how to get your website banned, by treating search engines like you treat a game with your friends. You try and cheat. Your friends probably ban you as well.

Remember just like email clients created spam and junk folder the same way do search engines. They created the nofollow tag and other sophisticated measures that work like a charm against spam.

My affiliate marketing update

If you read my last post you would know that I made a faux pas while promoting a clickbank product. If you haven’t seen my last post check it out for more info.
The situation has been resolved and the merchant and I are on good terms now.
Well instead of continuing to promote that product I decided to enroll in a marketing/product creation class created by Jonny Andrews. It’s called the guru assassin. I know it’s a funny name for an online course but I’ve learned much from him.
So I decided to implement what I’ve learned so far. I stayed in the same niche as before exept this time I’m not promoting the previous product. I may do so eventually.
However as of now, I’m using the same keywords as I was before but I’m using msn adcenter to drive ppc traffic. Unfortunetly the traffic is not as abundant as when I was using google adwords. The keywords cost as much as they did in adwords (slightly cheaper but much less traffic).
I decided to launch my own product but instead of just writing an ebook I prefer to taylor my product to what my list expect.
So far I’ve done 2 interviews. I must say it was a great experience. My first interview was with a New York Times best seller. I wasn’t entirely ready for that one. I actually rushed home to make the call and my recording tools failed on me. Fortunately my interviewee was more than prepared and bailed me out of the embarrassing moment. We had a good hour long recording session in which I’ve learned more about her business model.

Clickbank Merchant Threatens Me and tells me to stop promoting her product.

Ouch that’s not a nice way to start the weekend is it?

Here’s the story:

I started promoting a clickbank product in february solely via ppc marketing. I made more sales than anticipated and the sales kept rising. I contacted the merchant to get more tips on how to promote the site (banners, emails, basically a little more help..)
I never got an answer. A month later a sent another email stating that i started building a list and was close to 130 people on my list.
This time i got an answer after about a week’s time.
The merchant apologized about the wait and let me know she was updating the site to help out her affiliates.

I replied telling her i got a little annoyed about the fact that i didn’t get an answer the first time. Then i told her exactly how i was promoting her product. I created a squeeze page and populated the autoresponder with her own emails. I just replaced her links with my affiliate id. Then i asked her if she would agree to an interview.
My mistake here is using her emails, they are copy written and i had no rights to use them. But i did thinking it wouldn’t really be a big deal as long as i’m redirecting the traffic to her site.

Moments later i get a call from aweber because she had filed a complaint on me. I was stealing her business model and that i had no rights to do so. I got shocked and explained that i was basically redirecting traffic to her site and made a commission from that effort. I also stated that i was disappointed that the merchant didn’t contact me first and went straight to aweber.

I got an email from the merchant stating that i violated her copyright rules and that she wanted me to stop using her name and stop promoting her book.

The Aftermath:
I’ve erased all emails, I sent a letter of apology to the merchant.
I lost one source of income and i’m left with a site, some subscribers and nothing to promote to them.

Don’t be like me. Do not copy the emails of the merchant even when they don’t reply to your emails. Always ask for permission first.
Make sure you communicate well with the merchant before you buy your own website. Also being sincere about your marketing methods is not always a good thing.

Another lesson learned!

Costly Mistake With Google’s Site Targeting (a.k.a Placement Targeting)

In the hopes to driving quicker traffic to my site i decided to try to run a google site targeting. Unlike keyword targeted campaigns site targeting campaigns reside on other people’s content sites. Usually with a keyword targeted campaign your ads primarily appear in search engines and also on the content network if you choose to run it. In this case you are charged a certain amount per click. Let’s say that if your cost per click is 30 cents, each time someone clicks on your add you pay 30 cents. This basically how i’ve run most of my ppc campaigns so far.

Why did i decide to try site targeting?

I felt very bold and adventurous today. I’m also in a product creation phase and wanted to drive more traffic to my squeeze page. I wanted to direct traffic immediately. So that pretty much excluded many traffic tactics (article marketing, seo …). I could have added another campaign and use more keywords but i decided to go with a site targeting campaign. Under the pretext that i would be getting more targeted traffic. I also thought that i could ideally spend a lot less, because you’re charged on a cost per thousand impression. That means if you set your campaign to $1.00 for every 1000 impressions. You only pay $1 and nothing more than that. It doesn’t matter if you get 1000 clicks you still get charged the same regardless of how many clicks you receive. Which is pretty neat.

Why even bother running a site targeted campaign?

Am i crazy!? Humm… yeah lol i am but did you know that you can actually have extremely targeted buyers come to your site that way? Usually someone goes online looking for something and hopefully in my case to buy what it is i’m promoting. So the person jumps on google and types in that product. The person looks slightly to the right and low and behold!! My add is right there for them to click on. That’s great isn’t it? but maybe they were just curious and looking around. The person really had no intentions on buying anything. Well that’s fine and that’s where site targeting comes in.

The person looking for my product is on a relevant site. The person is already in the product buying curiosity mindset. The person reads and reads and sees my ad which has this call to action: Hey i know you’re looking for this, for this particular reason, well come here and get it. I’ve only tried that method for half of a day and i know that it works. Why, because i received feedback from them saying oh i was on a certain site and i saw your add, so i came here to find what it is i was looking for. It’s very nice to get that kind of feedback.

My mistakes:

I added too many sites to my campaign.

I didn’t even stop to think how much that would cost me.

I set my cost per thousand around $3.00 to maximize impressions

And the worst mistake of all was to set my budget at $100/day.

I’m glad i came back to check on my campaign because by that time i had already spent close to $80. Yeah! that’s right $80 in half of the day. That’s crazy!! I was not expecting this at all but it happened. So naturally i paused the campaign. I need to re-educate myself on running a site targeted campaign. On the plus side i broke a record by capturing a total of 40+ leads in half a day. Not too bad.

I learned my lesson and i will try to improve on my site targeting skills.

I’m proud to say it works because i’m constantly getting traffic to that site without anymore effort on my part. No ppc marketing, just pure organic traffic. STEP FOUR: Rework Your Article into a Video.

You want to rework your article into a video. This is can get a little complicated. If you are not proficient in using the computer or do not want to learn please hire this stuff out - it will save you loads of time.

What you will need to start out with is some recording equipment maybe a microphone and a program called Sound Forge built by Sony. With this, you can record yourself reading your article. You can also hire a voice talent to do this work; typically a professional voice talent gets paid at least $100 per hour.

When you have your audio created and ready to go, it is time to start creating the video. We use Microsoft Power Point to create template slides to use in our video and we use a program call Sony Vegas Movie Studio to put the audio and template slides all together.

You want to create at least 3 to 5 slides with key bullet points in your article. If more slides are needed, then you can make more (3 to 5 should be enough). When you create your slide make sure to save them as a picture file like "jpeg" so that you can import them into Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Once you have all of these items you will need to import the media into Sony Vegas Movie Studio and start building your video.

This is a great site to be on because it is considered an authority site on the internet and it has a page rank of 7. You can also put links back to your website on their site for free! This should be a no brainier as to why you would want to use this site to drive traffic.

STEP NINE: Bookmark Your Video Links.

The last step entails you to social bookmark your video links. This will help you boost your videos higher in the search engines. Ultimately, this will boost your main site even higher. A social bookmark site is just like using the bookmark tab in your browser. It bookmarks the sites you’re interested in. Although, rather than being on your computer, a social bookmark site allows you to save them online… so you can visit these book marks from any computer.

Just like the other sites, you have to create an account (login and password). Title your link, create a description (that is where you can put your call to action) and create your custom tags (in these are the keywords your are trying to promote). Once you’re finished with one site, you move on to the next and do it again.
